System 1 and System 2
Also known as · Zwei Denksysteme, Dual Process Theory
System 1 and System 2 describe two modes of thinking: one fast, automatic and emotional, the other slow, deliberate and effortful.
System 1 and System 2 are the two modes of thinking described by Daniel Kahneman. System 1 is fast, automatic, associative and emotional. System 2 is slow, deliberate and effortful — and, crucially, lazy: it accepts what System 1 offers unless something forces it to intervene.
Why System 1 and System 2 matter for brands
Nearly every everyday purchase is settled by System 1. That makes recognition, familiarity and ease of retrieval commercial factors rather than soft ones — they are the raw material the fast system works with.
What follows in practice
- Fluency wins. What is easy to process is judged more favourably and chosen more often.
- Context shapes judgement. Anchoring and framing change answers without changing facts.
- Arguments rarely decide. Rational claims mostly justify a choice already made.
This is the psychological groundwork beneath Mental Availability and Distinctive Brand Assets — both are ways of making a brand easy for the fast system to retrieve.

Distinctive Brand Assets

Mental Availability
Mental Availability is the probability that a brand comes to mind in a buying situation — how easily and how often it is noticed, recognised and thought of.
